Pukulan bagi Pierluigi Casiraghi, pelatih Timnas Italia di ajang Olimpiade Beijing, China. Satu-satunya pemain berusia di atas 23 tahun yang dibawa Casiraghi, striker Lazio, Tommaso Rocchi dipastikan absen dari turnamen karena mengalami cedera cukup parah di bagian tulang keringnya. Rocchi baru tampil dalam satu laga, melawan Korea Selatan, Minggu, 10 Agustus lalu. Dalam partai yang memastikan langkah Gli Azzurri ke babak perempat final itu Rocchi menyumbang satu dari tiga gol kemenangan Italia.

Sebelumnya, menjelang digelarnya pertandingan penyisihan grup cabang sepakbola yang serentak dimulai pada Kamis (7 Agustus) lalu, Rocchi mengalami cedera betis akibat berbenturan dengan rekannya Andrea Ranocchia di sesi latihan. Alhasil, Rocchi pun hanya masuk dalam tim cadangan saat Italia menggilas Honduras 3-0.

Jelang partai keduya lawan Korea, tim medis memeriksa kondisi betis Rocchi. Ditaksir cederanya ringan dan hanya masalah otot semata. Karenanya, Casiraghi mendapat lampu hijau untuk memainkan striker berusia 30 tahun tersebut. Namun, dua hari setelah laga tersebut, baru diketahui jika cedera yang dialami Rocchi ternyata lebih parah atau buruk dari dugaan semula. Itulah sebabnya Rocchi divonis absen dari turnamen.

“Saya bakal menyaksikan laga lawan Kamerun (Rabu, 13 Agustus) sebelum kembali ke Italia,” aku Rocchi seperti yang dilansir Channel4. Jelang laga penentuan juara grup itu, sejumlah anak asuh Casiraghi pun diragukan kebugarannya, yaitu gelandang Juventus, Claudio Marchisio dan Antonio Candreva.

Sementara itu, cederanya Rocchi membuat Presiden Biancocelesti—julukan Lazio—Claudio Lotito naik darah. Tanpa tedeng aling-aling, Lotito menunjuk hidung tim medis Gli Azzurri sebagai biang keladi cederanya Rocchi yang notabene menjadi striker andalan dan top skorer Lazio—mencetak 14 gol—di musim lalu.

“Ia (Rocchi) dipaksakan untuk bermain. Padahal, ia sedang dililit cedera. Sehnarusnya itu tidak boleh terjadi. Mereka (tim medis) menganggap cederanya hanya masalah otot belaka. Padahal, itu cedera tulang kering. Jelas, itu kesalahan tim medis. Saya pastikan jika tim medis kami (Lazio) yang menanganinya, tidak akan terjadi hal seperti itu,” tandas Lotito seperti yang dikutip Goal. [LB]

-Delio Rossi Relishing Liverpool Test
Lazio coach Delio Rossi is preparing his squad for their friendly against Liverpool, but he insists that the Biancocelesti cannot use these types of matches to gauge if the team is ready to return to European competition.

Lazio and Liverpool will face off at Anfield today in what many expect will be a physical match-up. Lazio coach Delio Rossi feels the same way and expects that his side will face a difficult test against the Reds. He is particularly concerned about the advanced preparation of their opponents, who began their season two weeks earlier, as well as the fiery atmosphere their passionate fans will generate.

Rossi voiced his concerns to SkySports but at the same time, he is interested to see how his players will react to an environment almost completely different from what they are used to in Italy.

"I want to go there tomorrow to see the character of my players and see who has the kind of spirit to play in this stadium," explained the coach, who risked being sacked this summer due to Lazio's 12th place finish last season, which meant that the team missed out on even the UEFA Cup this season, after competing in the group stages of the Champions League last year.

Lazio have arranged a majority of their pre-season games against high profile international club sides during the off-season including Slavia Prague, Liverpool and PAOK and while these matches will provide good experience for Lazio to get back into Europe in the future, Rossi is sceptical.

"The problem is that friendlies cannot return you on the path to Europe. I think we must go back to what we have done in the past three years, qualifying for Europe through the front door, not through friendlies," he stated.

Lazio's pedigree has fallen in recent times due to their poor results last season in both Serie A and Europe but they are hoping for a fresh start and to have a campaign similar to the 2006/2007 term when they qualified for the Champions League.


-Lazio Split Over Ledesma Debacle
Lazio seem to be divided over the future of Cristian Ledesma, with the club's hierarchy sending mixed messages regarding their player.
Ledesma’s future at the Olimpico seems far from secure. Reports claim the Argentine wants an increase in pay and he has threatened to leave if he doesn’t get it.

Club president Claudio Lotito is pushing the midfielder to move. On the other hand, coach Delio Rossi believes the 25-year-old will stay.

“Ledesma? This club will not allow anyone to give out orders,” blasted Lotito.

“We just want players who are attached to the shirt. Whoever wants to leave can do so.

“I will not accept any one who turns to the newspapers to explain their problems, this is called extorsion.”

However, Rossi has other ideas as he believes the player wants to remain in Biancocelesti colours.

“Ledesma wants to stay. Contracts are respected and he is attached to the shirt. I don’t think there will be any problems,” said the coach.

The midfielder has been linked with a move to Inter, but Lazio’s quarrel over him seems to be sending out an air of confusion regarding the affair.
